HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - This summer, you can read more books and win prizes with the Hawaii State Public Library System’s annual summer reading challenge.

The two-month-long challenge, themed “Mele,” was launched with a community celebration on Saturday.

The event featured keiki activities, giveaways, food and musical performances by local favorites Ke‘olu Music and Kawao.

The reading challenge aims to enroll 25,000 readers statewide to promote literacy among all ages. The more you read, the more rewards you redeem, the biggest being four round-trip tickets with Alaska Airlines.

“Our mission is to inspire curiosity and create opportunities for all to read learn and connect,” said Stacey Aldrich, Hawaii State Library System librarian.

Attendees were able to get or renew library cards and learn about the library’s new brand inspired by Hawaiian culture.

“Reading can be rewarding,” said Nainoa Mau, executive director of Friends of the Library of Hawaii. “We want families to come together and read this summer.”
